Types of Pokémon cards: Common, Uncommon and Rare

We can split the different types of Pokémon cards into three groups of rarity: Common, Uncommon and Rare. In this blog we are going to explain to you what these groups stand for and how you can recognize them.

Most common: Common Pokémon cards

The Common cards have the lowest rarity of any type of Pokémon card. This means that these cards are the most frequently pulled from the packs. So these are not special and you can recognize them by the circle at the bottom of the map. These are usually the simpler basic Pokémon. The thing is, these can still evolve and thus rise to a different rarity level. On average per Pokémon booster pack, there are 5 Common cards in it. See below for a sample map, see the bottom right hand corner next to the map number.

Average common: Uncommon cards

Common Pokémon cards are somewhat less common, as they have an average rarity. These can be identified by the square or diamond-like figure at the bottom right of the card. These are normally Stage-1 Pokémon cards. This is the middle version of an evolution series; there are exceptions to this rule. On average, there are 3 Common cards in one booster pack. See an example below, we use the evolution line of Charmander, Charmeleon and Charizard in this example:

Few: Weird Cards

These are the rarest cards around. These are the least common and most sought after by all Pokémon collectors. You can recognize these cards by the asterisk in the lower right corner of the card. These are sometimes normal holo cards, but can also be the rarest chase cards in a set. On average there is 1 rare in one booster pack, note there are exceptions to the rule. After all, you may find 2 fat hits in one pack or the reverse holo may also be a weird one. But there must be at least one weirdo in a packet. We take as an example the Holo base Charizard, one of the rarest Pokémon cards in existence and highly coveted by Pokémon collectors.
