At the time, the card distributor for The Pokemon Company accidentally printed this pre-release Raichu. Then these were only distributed to a group of staff members. So you could never pull this card out of a pack and if you didn’t work at Pokemon you didn’t get one. The only option to get your hands on it then was to buy it over from someone who did get it. At the bottom right of the holo image you will see the letters ”PRERELEASE”. So because of this, you know it’s a pre-release card. It wasn’t until 2006 that a photo of it surfaced, see the image below. What is the value of this card? Unfortunately no one knows, because there are so few of them ebay sold listings is no use either.

You’ve probably heard of it, the Pikachu Illustrator card. This is the most expensive Pokemon card of all time, and very rare. We go back to the year 1998 there was then namely a CoroCoro illustration contest in Japan. Only the winners received this very special card. But there weren’t many of those, estimates are that between 20 and 39 were handed out. And over the years, of course, some have been damaged, lost and so on. Only 10 more have been spotted in ‘Mint’ condition. And that makes this card the rarest and most expensive card in the entire Pokemon world.

End

So what stands out to us are several things. The popularity of a card plays a big part in its price, its antiquity usually plays a big part in its price, its quality (whether it is a PSA 10 yes or no) and of course its quantity are. So think about this carefully before you make your next purchase! We hope you enjoyed this blog, if you have any questions and/or comments you can always ask.
