It all started, of course, with the new Pokemon cards generation: Pokemon Sword & Shield. The very first set of this era came out on Feb. 7, 2020. This was just before the corona period and the very biggest hype Pokemon cards ever received. This generation finally ended with the Crown Zenith set that came out Jan. 20, 2023. Please note, this was a special holiday set, these do not contain Pokemon booster boxes. Like Pokemon Go, Celebrations, Shining Fates and Champions Path that came out in this generation. These holiday sets do include the Pokemon Elite Trainer Boxes and there are then more pokemon boosters in them and a promo. And again, please note since the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet era this has changed again now all elite trainer boxes have the same amount of boosters and 1 sealed promo card. Anyway, we are going to start with the rarest and most expensive booster boxes of this generation. But first we’ll explain to you exactly what a booster box is so be sure to read on.
What is a Pokemon booster box?
A Pokemon booster box is a sealed box containing 36 booster packs. The boxes come in different versions in terms of series. Thus, every normal Pokemon series gets a booster box. The holiday sets are an exception to the rule, as they do not get booster boxes. These booster boxes are great fun to open because you can open a nice lot of boosters in a row namely 36. They are packed per case with 6 boxes in a large oblong box. Always make sure when you buy booster boxes that they are official. In fact, there are also fake boxes in circulation, so always buy your products from a reliable Pokemon store such as www.pokemart.nl. There are also many Pokemon collectors who collect these booster boxes for the sealed collection. In fact, as time goes on, these boxes often increase in price. 1) Pokemon Evolving Skies Booster Box
This box is the rarest and most expensive of the entire generation. This, of course, is because of the super fat alternate arts in it. Indeed, the Umbreon VMAX is already worth around 1,000 euros in a PSA 10. Definitely recommend adding this one to your collection!
2) Pokemon Sword & Shield Base Booster Box
You might not expect it, since there are not exactly expensive cards in this set. But this is still a real gem that has become super rare. You’re not going to find these boxes anytime soon, and are already heading toward 300 euros per box. This was the very first booster box of this generation.
3) Pokemon Rebel Clash booster box
Even with this box you wouldn’t easily expect it, but it really is in the top three. This is the second set of this generation and here again the same thing is going on. Despite having few expensive cards in the set, booster boxes are becoming increasingly scarce. As a result, the price has risen considerably in recent years.
4) Pokemon Brilliant Stars Booster Box
The set with the very first Charizard alternate art in it. How beautiful is that card, in addition to that a rainbow VSTAR Charizard. A true Charizard set that should not be missing from your collection. It is a bit stagnant in terms of price at the moment, but is heading toward 200 euros per box.
5) Pokemon Chilling Reign Booster Box
The set with the Blaziken and Moltres alternate arts in it. At the beginning, this set was highly sought after, but the boxes quickly dropped to 100 euros per box. Meanwhile, these have been completely recovered and you can find them for around 180 euros per booster box.
6) Pokemon Darkness Ablaze Booster Box
The set with the very first Charizard VMAX pokemon card in it. At the beginning, there was some hype around this set. But the sets that followed in subsequent years had much nicer and rarer Charizards. As a result, Darkness Ablaze unfortunately fell by the wayside. But the booster boxes are holding up and becoming increasingly scarce. Not surprising since this set is from 2020.
7) Pokemon Vivid Voltage Booster Box
The set with the Rainbow Pikachu card. Meanwhile, this card is still over 100 euros and Pikachu, of course, remains very special. He also looks great on the front of the booster box. Despite the fact that that is now the only card in the set with much value left. Do the sealed booster boxes remain stable around 160 to 170. Certainly not bad, and the set also comes from 2020.
8) Pokemon Fusion Strike Booster Box
What a set Fusion Strike is, unfortunately the timing wasn’t right. This set came out right after the Celebrations set that was so popular. That this Fusion Strike completely snowballed. For a long time, the boxes went for as little as 100 euros each, but now they are more popular than ever. Many people still dare to take a gamble in pursuit of the Gengar and Espeon alternate arts. The boxes, meanwhile, go for 160 euros each. So that’s a nice increase of already 60% in just over 1 year.
9) Pokemon Lost Origin Booster Box
The set with one of the most beautiful and expensive alternate art cards of this generation in it. Namely the Giratina Alternate Art, despite that, this box ranks quite low in the list. This is because it was still released in late 2022, it still needs to mature shall we say. But definitely worth adding a few to your collection!
10) Pokemon Silver Tempest Booster Box
The set with the famous Lugia alternate art card in it. What a wonderful set it is, but again the same thing is going on here as with Lost Origin. The set is not yet old enough and there are still plenty of booster boxes in circulation. This set also needs some time to mature.
11) Pokemon Astral Radiance Booster Box
The set with the Machamp alternate art card in it. A super fun set that also needs its time. Also, don’t forget the fat trainer gallery collection that comes with it.
12) Pokemon Battle Styles Booster Box
The set featuring the very first alternate art Pokemon card of this generation. They were there at the Pokemon Sun & Moon era, of course, but then disappeared for just over a year. It wasn’t until Battle Styles that they got their return in the Pokemon TCG. This set is currently the least rare and most expensive of the entire generation. Who knows, maybe that will change in the future.

It’s a surprising list, especially when you realize that all these booster boxes started their journey around 100 to 140 euros. Some are already worth toward or above 400 euros. Crazy how that can run within the Pokemon world. Also very strange to see that the very first sets that don’t actually have any big hits in the set do very well in terms of sealed collection. A very nice list and it couldn’t help but be that Evolving Skies is in the first place.
